Edward Hopper Ground Swell

Description:
In the Collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Museum Purchase, William A. Clark, Washington, D.C. Since childhood Hopper was fascinated with boats and the sea. When he was fifteen his father gaven nim materials to build a cat-boat. Although it never sailed very well, Hopper did consider a career as a naval architec. As an adult he owned a boat, but later, at Jo's insistence, he sold it. No doubt "Ground Swell" reflects Hopper's summers in New England on his own boat and on those of others.
