The varied objects in the shop window might suggest a curio shop, but the true nature of its business is quite elusive. Hopper places the scene in the early morning hours when the streets are still deserted. The homey, familiar atmoshere of the shop stands in contrast to the dark overgrown woods behind it.

Fine artists create serigraphs in limited runs by applying layer upon layer of pigment to the print surface by pressing it through a mesh screen containing a stencil. The inks used are specially formulated so that the fine print heads can spurt jets of ink in minute droplets.
