Claude Monet Chemin dans les bles a Pourville, 1882

Description:
What is most noticeable about this painting are the strong, bright colors. The blue of the sea is reminiscent of some of Monet's paintings from the Mediterranean. What he set out to do was to capture the effects of a brilliant summer's day on the beach landscape. By using strong colors that contrast with each other rather than blend together, he achieves the effect of each color appearing even stronger. Thus, where the red of the wheat touches the blue of the sea, each benefits from the contrast; the same is true where the sea meets the shore. This time the effect of the sun is to render the sand a brilliant white. These blocks of colors work together to create an impression on the viewer. There is actually very little detail in the picture itself. This painting has strong lines that form horizontals and verticals. In the picture the curved path not only draws the eye towards the sea but also provides a vertical curve that meets the sand and continues to the horizon. This balances the horizontal of the sea and cliff.
