During the early 1870's Degas focused on female ballet dancers as a medium. He attended many performances at the Paris opera house sketching from live models in motion. Degas created flowing motion by positioning girls in different positions in close proximity.

The inks used are specially formulated so that the fine print heads can spurt jets of ink in minute droplets.
