Rebecca Koury Wall Art

Rebecca Koury is a widely-traveled artist whose works aim to blend the influences of both current and ancient cultures. Her extensive travels throughout Canada, the U.S., Southeast Asia and Mexico have exposed her to many diverse forms of art and cultures. This exposure has led her to an allure with other cultures, both contemporary and ancient. Rebecca loves the process of discovery, especially how her own life is a part of and intersects with these cultural influences. The artist asserts that humans are not separate from each other or from the earth that they inhabit. She believes that no matter what era or culture we are living in, we can find similarities and parallels that blend harmoniously and weave us together with our worlds. The integral parts of her painting vocabulary include textured surfaces and rich layers of color based on patterns from fabrics, nature, written language, ancient ruins and symbols.

Her passion for collage and fascination with texture stems from her background which is highly sculptural. Even as a child, she was always creating collages on the walls, organizing and rearranging her room, and collecting beautiful and unusual objects, such as shells, rocks, bits of exotic fabric, boxes, trims and ribbons. She hand-crafts her layered collages with graphite, metal leaf, imported papers, stains, acrylic paints, varnishes, glazes, pastels, oils and. She works primarily on canvas and once in awhile on paper. Rebecca holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Texas in Austin. She majored in sculpture and Minored in Art History.
