Pedro Alvarez Wall Art

Pedro Alvarez was a Cuban painter and artist who became popular during the economic depression in Cuba in the 1990s. He studied art at San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts (Havana University). His strongly political references and comedic use of pop art contributed to his international fame. Having studied in one of the leading schools in Cuba his artistic star rose so fast. His painting style was highly influenced by the development of popular culture in Cuba during what was referred to as the Special Period, just like those of many other Cuban artists of that era. Alvarez named Velasquez Diego as having inspired him to become a painter, but the person who most heavily influenced his style was Mark Tanley. He discovered American artist Mark Tanley’s distinctive painting style in an issue of Art America when he was still a student at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts.

His eyes were opened to the effects of everyday, tradition life, and profession on the forms of art, which resulted from the analytical education he received from the academy. Alvarez’ approaches to painting became satirical. Most of his earlier works include historical personalities from various eras. They also include everyday objects. African, European, and American pop culture are also apparent in some of his works. Alvarez committed suicide by jumping out of the 5th-floor window of a hotel in Tempe, Arizona. During the autopsy no traces of drugs or alcohol were found. He died just 5 days before a solo exhibition of his work took place at the Arizona State University Art Museum.
